Desmond Johnston is the Head of the Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism Section within the Department of Medicine. His section is involved in several clinical and laboratory-based research investigating early changes in insulin secretion. insulin sensitivity and other aspects of metabolism in people predisposed to Type 2 diabetes before diabetes develops. He is also interested in the mechanisms underlying the premature vascular disease to which people with diabetes are prone and in associated metabolic disturbances.
Prof. Johnston is also the Vice Dean for Education in the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London. His role includes responsibility for medical education and activities related to the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine a joint initiative between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
He joined the St Marys Hospital Medical School in 1986 and is a former Chief of Service (Specialist & Elderly Medicine) in the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is a trained clinician and is actively involved in diabetes and metabolic medicine clinics.
