Gordon A. Francis MD is Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology and Metabolism) and a Physician Scientist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Canada. He has published widely primary research papers. reviews and book chapters in the areas of lipid metabolism. high density lipoproteins. intracellular cholesterol transport and efflux. clinical lipid management. and recently the role of smooth muscle cells in foam cell formation in atherosclerotic plaque. He has held continuous funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for studies on lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis since 1994.
Clinically. Dr. Francis is Director of the Healthy Heart Program Prevention/Lipid Clinic based at St. Pauls Hospital in Vancouver. one of the largest clinics for lipid disorders and cardiovascular risk reduction in the world. He is a member of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Guidelines panel for the management of dyslipidemia. recently advocating for the use of non-HDL-cholesterol as an alternate treatment target. and the use of nonfasting testing for screening and follow up of lipid levels. As a clinical lipidologist. he has participated in many clinical trials of novel lipid-lowering therapies. He is particularly interested in educating physicians on recognizing and treating inherited hypercholesterolemia in these high risk patients.
